Hōkūleʻa is a waʻa kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe launched on March 8, 1975 by the Polynesian Voyaging Society. She was fully restored and embarked on her Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage in 2013 from Sand Island navigating as the ancient Polynesians did by wayfinding. I was fortunate to see and board her prior to her journey. This is a painting of her at sunset on Sand Island, Honolulu, Hawaii. (nfs)

While camping at the end of the 10 mile Kalalau Trail, Na Pali Coast, Kauai, a storm hit along with flash flooding and rock slides. It was quite the adventure. The evening following the storm we were greeted with an amazing sunset.

This is a bit of an experimental piece, but I put it here because, well, it is sunsets and rises set against a night sky in the form of chips popping out of a bowl.

This is where the pandemic hit. For years I had been taking the class Painting 1+2 at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The class was for beginners through more advanced painters in either oil or acrylic. The beginners had the more one-on-one instruction with specific activities. The more advanced painters worked on their own paintings with the help and guidance from the instructor - and the camaraderie of their fellow painters. I was one of the oil painters, but with the closing of the museum I started painting from home and made the switch to acrylic.

This is the painting I started live at the Oceanside Art Walk. As I had just moved and much of my art supplies were still in boxes, I did not have my pallet knife - which I needed for the mountains. Ah, but I had a small piece of flat wood ... so, I used that for the mountains and reflective colors in the water.
